From the High Plains to the High Arctic and beyond, the Native American artifact collection at Cranbrook Institute of Science is considered among the finest in North America. Join Cameron Wood, CIS Anthropologist and Educator, for an in-depth overview of this remarkable collection including its origin, variation and collection history. A private tour of the Institute’s collections storage vault to view Native American objects not currently on display will be included.
A Sneak Peek of the 2010 Graduate Degree Exhibition*

Academy of Art Director Reed Kroloff and Art Museum Director Greg Wittkopp will personally lead a preview tour of the 2010 Graduate Degree show of the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet and discuss work with several graduate students of the Cranbrook Academy of Art as the students complete their installations for the exhibition. Maximum 25 attendees.
*Due to ongoing construction at Cranbrook Art Museum, the 2010 Graduate Degree Exhibition and this sneak peek experience will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit is located at 4454 Woodward Avenue, three blocks south of Warren Avenue on the east side of Woodward.
All That Shines and Sparkles: The Crystal Collection of Cranbrook Institute of Science

Minerals in their crystalline forms are some of the most beautiful objects in nature. Spanning a rainbow of colors and countless shapes, crystals have long been sought after by scientists, artists and collectors. Join Cranbrook geologist John Zawiskie for an up-close and personal tour of the Institute’s world-class collection of crystals from around the globe. Opportunities for close-up photography and the chance to view specimens not typically on display will be offered.
The Nose Knows: The Floral Scents of Cranbrook Gardens

Discover floral combinations in Cranbrook Gardens that evoke our sense of smell. Learn how the brain “knows” and translates scent molecules into mood, emotion and memory. This talk will trace the history of perfume, beginning with the earliest recorded Egyptian perfume in 2686 B.C.E. and culminating with Coco Chanel’s release of No. 5 in 1921, which launched the modern era of commercial perfumeries.
